Feijoas in Awakeri
1.00pm Field day Sunday 12th April – Luxton Road, Awakeri
Tony and his wife have been growing feijoas here enthusiastically for many years. When we last visited in 2006 he was just developing a method of catching the feijoas so they wouln’t fall to the ground and be unmarketable. It will be interesting to see if that is still operating. He was also in the process of developing the feijoa variety ‘Golden Goose’ which is now available from Incredible Edibles plus his previous variety ‘White Goose’. Tony’s feijoas should be just starting but today, March 17, Brian Barton picked his first bucket full of the new early variety ‘Anatoki’ and Bill Rae has picked up our first fruit, a Kakariki.
There is also on site the recently re-opened ‘White Goose Cafe’ which you might like to visit for lunch. They have a small all day menu all under $20. Alternatively take your lunch and get a coffee from them or even a feijoa fruit wine provided by the on site winery. Best time to arrive to be ready for 1.00pm start would be between 11.30 and mid-day. Cafe phone 07 308 7879 or 02 10 831 8931
If anyone is really keen Awakeri Hot Springs also has hot mineral pools and cabins to stay.
