Sunday 24th August 10am
Chris has arranged for us to visit two neighbouring properties, both with mature plantings and stunning views north-east across the Ahuriri Estuary.
Ballantyne Place, Poriati. (Approx. 12 minutes from Taradale shops)
Puketitiri Road, north into Poriate Road, west/left into Ballantyne Road, north-east into Ballantyne Place.
David says… It is only 3.5km from the start of Poriati Rd to Ballantyne Place, but the road is windy and it feels a lot further! And…
The best place to park will be on the grass verge in the turn circle at the end of Ballantyne Place. This parking requires a short walk from the car to the two properties. There will be no need to move your vehicle once parked. Please carpool where possible, to reduce vehicle numbers.
PROPERTY ONE (10am -12noon)
The hosts of the first property are David & Rosemary. Chris Ryan and David will lead our main focus at this site, which is Citrus. There is approximately one acre of Mandarin `Encore’, plus other varieties throughout the property. We will also see close to an acre of Apricot ‘Royal Rosa’, many mature fruiting and amenity trees and shrubs, scented plants, chooks, avocado, and various stonefruit. David has run a business training horticultural skills, and he has an expert knowledge of sprays, pests and diseases, and the equipment required for using them.
Lunch will be eaten at the completion of touring David & Rosemary’s property, on the deck if fine, or in the garage if raining. Take your folding chair, your lunch & liquids.
Toilets available in the host’s houses.
PROPERTY TWO (1pm – approx.2~3pm)
The hosts of the second property are Robyn & Barrie. Here the focus is to be on the Almonds. We will also see a grove of mature hazel trees in a range of cultivars which are producing nuts, more resident chooks, plus an interestingly wide variety of fruit trees and shrubs.
Robyn has a knowledge of plants which greatly impressed Chris when he visited recently, and Barrie has a knowledge of the intricacies of Hawke’s Bay’s dam/aquifer.
TreeCrop signs will be at the gate.Rain or shine event.
The two properties are on hillsides that slope down to the Ahuriri estuary. There are reasonable walking tracks, but sturdy walking shoes are advised.
