Hawke’s Bay 2013 December FIELD TRIP – Three Waimarama properties
Saturday 7th December

10am Morning property
George & Marina will show us around their coastal permaculture smallholding.
We will see a wide range of newly planted and grafted fruit trees, including some unusual varieties.
There are also vegetables, fruit cages keeping out feathered fowl (chooks, guinee fowl, geese).
George’s carpentry skills will inspire those who are interested in wooden construction projects.
There would have been eggs for sale at this property but the girls have decided to go broody, but marina says there will be lots of chickens, ducks, pigeons and roosters for the table or as pets, we better take our cage and chilli bin in just in case.
12 noon Lunch
Bring your picnic lunch and liquids, as we will eat our lunch at George & Marinas place before departing for the 10 minute drive to the first afternoon property.
Lavatory available, also in the public Domain nearby.
Parking instructions etc for the afternoon properties will be explained at lunchtime.
First afternoon property (approx 1.00pm)
Waimarama Road. Peter & Sally will show us sub-tropical fruit plantings on their high altitude farm, including Cherimoya, Sapote and Avocado. We will see fruit trees which Chris says will surprise us in demonstrating how much hardier sub-tropical fruits can be than we would expect.
Second afternoon property
Waimarama Road. Ben’s farm is on the road back to Havelock North, and is the home of Eucalyptus forestry, plus various tree plantings of particular interest to Ben.
Ben will tell us about his two breeding populations for New Zealand Dryland Forestry Initiative trial work. Sturdy shoes advisable for walking in long grass. 4WD useful if available but don’t be put off, we plan to 4WD carpool once on this property.
