PRUNING WORKSHOP – SUNDAY 10 AUGUST 2014
Many of our Members request Pruning Demo’s… so this year we are
giving you two bites of the cherry…
Following on from Warren’s expert tuition in July, this afternoon we will be joining forces with Hannah Zwartz the Kapiti Coast Green Gardener, and Otaki College Community Garden.
You may recall that last year TreeCrops members gave pruning advice to Raumati residents so that they could manage the fruit trees (planted by our branch) at Matthew’s Park. Well that advice was so well received we have been asked this year to assist with experience sharing at the Otaki College Community Garden.
Sunday 10th August – AFTERNOON VISIT
1pm – Otaki College Community Garden
33 Mill Road, OTAKI
The college community garden is alongside the old Horticulture Block, where solid horticulture skills were taught for many years. The hort block and surrounding garden became neglected over time, but has recently benefited from renewed energy of teachers and community members.
The older trees are citrus, figs, apples, pears, grapes, berries & plums – a similar range to a home orchard.
There are also about 20 younger trees planted by Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Rito. These need some structural shaping.
The Te Rito trees also need underplanting with comfrey and other good companion plants. Hannah Zwartz will be talking about companion planting for a home orchard.
So come join us for a pruning demo and working bee, on some established trees.
