A 4 year mulch trial growing Pittosporum at Unitec has interesting results for plants and the environment. The 7 different treatments have surprising results. A visit to Unitec for prior to the meeting to view plantings. More details closer to time.

David Anstice from the FOODBOWL (an open-access plant dedicated to fostering and advancing New Zealand’s food innovators) and Martyn Atack from food inc (food industry consultants) will talk about how we could use our surplus fruit in food product development, quality systems management, production, packaging, and marketing.

Tanya Cumberland and Charmaine Pountney from earthtalk at awhitu will tell us of their venture into subtropical orchards, gardens, coastal native bush, tour groups, markets and delicious organic food for their farmstay guests.

Virgil Evetts – a cook, writer and avid food cropper will talk on growing and consuming unusual edibles. Some areas which may be discussed: ‘digital plant collecting”- sourcing seeds from overseas, the processes, the pitfalls etc… Growing the more unusual fruits like Prune plums, mulberries, astringent persimmons, currant grapes, babaco, curry leaf…
Virgil spent 16 years as a gallery manager and educator at Auckland Museum before embarking upon a career in freelance writing, specialising in food, gardening and related topics. He has written for New Zealand Gardener Magazine, Cuisine, The New Zealand Herald and others. –This talk sounds really interesting – Don’t miss this one!!!!
